Everyone has seen the lineup of what’s coming between now and the end of Q1 08, the list of great games is massive and expensive. Nobody likes seeing their favorite game delayed, but recently it’s been a godsend giving us more time to spend with these Q4 games before the next one rolls through our door. Despite the games being delayed it’s still hard to keep track of releases, recently I missed the release date for Zelda on the DS, trying the follow the rest of the games coming out just made it slip by, I believe I have found the solution.

Ical is likely something that a lot of people aren’t familiar with, perhaps Google Calendar will sound more familiar to many. Google Calendar (calendar.google.com) is usually used to schedule meetings, or remember that birthday you’re always forgetting, it also has the feature of allowing you to subscribe to other people’s shared Calendars, either stored in Google or in ical format, this can be especially useful if a calender happens to have a list of game release dates. Narf_tm from trulycertifiable.com has created a series of ical calendars that can be imported into Google that pull the updated release lists straight from Amazon using some kind of special magic to create something a little like the image below.

I’ll give you a quick run down of how to get this setup and running.

  1. Head to calendar.google.com
  2. Sign into your Google account (You have one already right?)
  3. Just above your calendar in the bottom left, click the down arrow next to “Add” and select “Add by URL”
  4. Enter the address of the Calendar you want
  5. Repeat 4 until you have all the Calendars you need.

The magic URLs you’ll need are:

  • (360)
    webcal://www.trulycertifiable.com/calendars/Xbox_360.ics
  • (DS)
    webcal://www.trulycertifiable.com/calendars/Nintendo_DS.ics
  • (PC)
    webcal://www.trulycertifiable.com/calendars/PC_Games.ics
  • (Wii)
    webcal://trulycertifiable.com/calendars/Nintendo_Wii.ics
  • (PS3)
    webcal://trulycertifiable.com/calendars/Sony_PS3.ics
  • (PS2)
    webcal://trulycertifiable.com/calendars/Sony_PSP.ics

Why would you want to do this when you could just head to Gamespot to get your daily listings? Well you can colour code your calendars by clicking to the right of the calendar on your list, as well as set up daily reminders for what’s coming directly to your cell phone (The website also displays great on the iPhone), Get individual alerts so you’ll know a week beforehand when a game is due and even sync the whole lot onto your PC/Mac if you’re using the right software. This may not be the greatest how-to you’ll read today, but I know I’m not going to miss my next big game release and I hope you don’t either.
